Restoring Charm: Sussex Sash Breathes New Life into Isle of Wight Conservatory

Darren Willmott • Mar 01, 2024

Nestled in the quaint Altoft Gardens in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, and steeped in the Island's rich history, lies our client's home with its charming softwood conservatory and historical potting shed.

However, neglect had taken its toll, leaving the structures in dire need of restoration. Enter Sussex Sash, the beacon of expertise in the realm of traditional timber sash windows, with a mission to revive the conservatory to its former glory. Unfortunately, the potting shed was beyond economical repair.

Upon recommendation, Sussex Sash embarked on a journey to breathe new life into the weathered conservatory. A meticulous assessment ensued, culminating in a detailed quotation that outlined the restoration process. Recognising the significance of preserving the Island's architectural heritage, Sussex Sash proposed the use of Accoya wood for cladding the rafters, ensuring longevity for generations to come.

With a commitment to excellence, Sussex Sash swiftly sprang into action, scheduling and completing the project at short notice. Flexibility was key as the team seamlessly navigated around the client's schedule and the visits of guests to the property. The images you see here, captured during the restoration, reveal the extent of the challenge, showcasing the pervasive rot that had afflicted the softwood structure, doors, and externals of the conservatory.

Undeterred by the task at hand, Sussex Sash embarked on a journey of meticulous craftsmanship, expertly cutting out the damaged areas and replacing them with the resilient Accoya wood. As the project unfolded, a full scaffolding was erected to facilitate remedial work on the roof, providing an opportune moment to inspect the woodwork and windows at the upper levels. This proactive approach enabled is and the client to survey the rear elevation and take on any additional works that were required, ensuring a comprehensive restoration and repair from top to bottom.

As the final touches await completion post-scaffolding dismantlement, anticipation brews for the unveiling of the restored conservatory in all its resplendent glory. Stay tuned for Part 2 as Sussex Sash continues to weave its magic, breathing new life into Isle of Wight's architectural treasures.
