Preserving History: Sussex Sash's Restoration of Northwood House Ballroom Windows

Darren Willmott • Aug 20, 2023

In the heart of Cowes on the Isle of Wight stands the iconic Northwood House, a historic estate with a rich legacy dating back to the late 18th century.

Over the years, the house has played host to lavish gatherings, including events attended by the Royal family during the Victorian era.

Today, Northwood House continues to be a cherished venue for various social occasions, including weddings.

Recently, Sussex Sash had the honor of contributing to the preservation of this historical gem. Mr. Darren J Cool, CEO, and Mr. Tim Wander, Historian & Project Manager of Northwood House, reached out to Sussex Sash seeking expertise in the repair and replacement of the windows in the South East Ballroom. This particular space boasts breathtaking views of Northwood Park and the Solent, making it a focal point for events and celebrations.

The Initial Survey Visit

The journey began in 2022 with an insightful visit to Northwood House. Tim Wander, our guide through the historic property, provided a glimpse into its past and ongoing restoration efforts. Despite the ongoing improvements, it was evident that neglect from previous custodians had taken its toll on the estate.

The focus of our attention during the survey was the South East Ballroom windows. Years of wear and tear had rendered them beyond practical repair, necessitating complete replacement. The sheer size of the windows, coupled with extensive ornate trim and carvings, presented a significant challenge. It was clear from the outset that accuracy and attention to detail would be paramount in this restoration endeavor.

Scope of the Project

The overarching goal was to maintain the grandeur of Northwood House while adhering to its original Georgian style. To achieve this, all components needed to be replicated faithfully, with Accoya timber selected for the new windows. Recognizing the complexity of the project, Sussex Sash brought in Mr. Matt Lord, a specialist joinery surveyor, and Mr. Brian Haynes, who conducted the company's risk assessment and method statements.

Impeccable Installation

After weeks of meticulous craftsmanship, the new single-glazed Accoya joinery was ready for delivery and installation. The project timeline was tight, with just a one-week window available between scheduled wedding events at Northwood House. Adam and Steve, part of the property maintenance team, played a crucial role in the process, assisting in the removal and cleaning of custom velvet curtains and reinstalling the historic pelmet carvings and trim.

The precision with which Sussex Sash replicated the original windows ensured a seamless reinstallation of the ornate carvings, trim, and curtain track. The result is not only aesthetically pleasing but also virtually indistinguishable from the original windows—a testament to the company's commitment to excellence.
